PBHS graduates participate in European interterm tours

Peabody-Burns High School graduates Brett Klingenberg, son of Vern and Carol Klingenberg, Luke Schmidt, son of Archie and Kristin Schmidt, and Chris Shaw, son of Mike and Bonnie Shaw, spent their Bethel College January interterm in Europe.

Brett and Chris were a part of the 45 member Bethel Concert Choir which performed 15 concerts in five countries — France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. Cathedrals, castles, concentration camps, concerts, museums, theaters, home stays, and other cultural opportunities all were part of the tour.

A highlight for Brett was singing in the oldest Mennonite church in Switzerland and a home stay on the farm of Horsch Manufacturing Co., international maker of no-till equipment. The Horsch family's other enterprises include a large hog operation.

Chris was very happy to be in the presence of Johann Sebastian Bach at the Bach Museum.

You are invited to a performance of their tour concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bethel College Mennonite Church on the college campus in North Newton.

Luke Schmidt and a fellow Bethel student left Jan. 2 to visit a friend in Ireland. They spent their week in Dublin and Belfast. A highlight for Luke was seeing the Book of Kells at the Trinity College Library in Dublin. This book is considered to be the world's most beautiful illuminated manuscript.

They joined the eight-member Mathematical History tour group in London, England. Visits also were made to Cambridge, England; Paris, France; Goettingen, Germany; and Budapest, Hungary.

The group toured mathematically historical sites, science and art museums, cathedrals, colleges, and libraries. Luke wished he could have spent more time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England.

All three had a wonderful trip and are now beginning their spring semester at Bethel College. Chris is a sophomore pursuing a music major, Brett is a junior working on a history major, and Luke is a junior with his minor in mathematics and majors in chemistry and physics.
