A homecoming victory Friday gave the Peabody-Burns High School Warriors their third win of the season. The squad defeated Canton-Galva, 30-28. Now 3-0, they will head to Sedgwick.
Canton-Galva had the first offensive series of the night. The Eagles took the ball from their own 14-yard line to the Warrior end zone. The drive took more than six minutes and the Eagles struck first to make the score 6-0 in favor of the visitors.
Warrior offense took the field after Ben Eldridge downed the Eagle kick-off at the Warrior 33. Trevor Hamm and Nathan Bishop combined running yards for a new set of downs. Todd Woodruff exploded on a 48-yard run on the next play to set up first and goal at the Eagle nine. It took four downs, but on fourth and goal at the two, Woodruff climbed through the middle for the score. Will Pratt tacked on the extra point and the Warriors went up one with 1:47 left in the first period.
Warrior defense forced a fumble with just seconds left in the first quarter. Pratt recovered the ball and PBHS offense set up on the Eagle 35. Woodruff moved the sticks with a 26-yard gain. Bishop and Derrick Simmonds worked the ball to the four-yard line. On fourth and goal at the four, Woodruff punched the ball in over the middle. Pratt added an extra point and the Warriors widened the lead, 14-6, with 11:12 on the clock in the second period.
Canton-Galva started their next offensive drive at their own six-yard line. They moved the ball successfully and also benefited from Warrior penalties. The Eagles found the end zone with just less than eight minutes left in the half. A two-point pass play gave them the conversion points and the score was all even at 14.
The Warriors were forced to punt on their next offensive series. On first down, an Eagle pass was intercepted by Woodruff to put PBHS offense back on the field at the Canton-Galva six-yard line. Bishop and an Eagle penalty set up second and goal at the one. Woodruff again got the call and took the ball into the end zone for the score. Pratt added one and the Warriors claimed the lead again, 21-14, with 4:47 left in the half.
Adam Benson shut down the Eagles with an interception on the next series, but the Warriors were forced to punt the ball away on fourth and 14 at the Eagle 46. With only 1:43 left on the clock, Warrior defensive plays by Eldridge, Pratt, Eric Dutton, and Bishop kept Canton-Galva out of the end zone. The score was in favor of PBHS at the half, 21-14.
Tackles were recorded in the first half by Dutton, Nick Abramowich, Pratt, Woodruff, Simmonds, Hamm, Eldridge, Andrew Loucks, Bishop, Benson, Sean Corona, Brandon Pickens, and Cole Welsh.
The Eagles came out after halftime and went the length of the field for the first score of the second half. They kicked the point after and tied the game at 21 with 5:45 left in the third period.
A short Eagle kick put the Warrior offense to work on their own 43. A holding penalty sent PBHS back to the 35. Bishop caught a Simmonds pass to make up all but six yards. Woodruff moved the sticks to the Eagles 36. An Eagle pass interference penalty put the Warriors at first and 10 at the Eagle 20. The 13-yard line was as far as the offense could move the ball on three attempts. Pratt kicked the first PBHS field goal of the season to once again give the home team the lead, 24-21, with less than a minute to play in the third.
PBHS defense came up huge on the next series, stopping the Eagles on fourth and one at the Warrior nine yard line. Bishop, Welsh, Benson, Woodruff, Pickens, and Hamm recorded tackles on the series.
Warrior offense took the ball from their own nine to the Eagle 11 with Woodruff, Bishop, and Hamm earning yards. On first and 10 at the 11, Woodruff scored a fourth touchdown with 4:12 on the clock. The PAT by Pratt was blocked and the Warrior lead was 30-21.
Canton-Galva started their final scoring drive at their own 20. The Eagle passing game came up big. At first and 10 at the Warrior 14, an Eagle end zone pass put the score at 30-27. The PAT was good and the gap was two, 30-28, with 1:53 left in the game.
Warrior offense started at their own 20. The Eagles managed to stop the clock twice and the PBHS squad was at third and 12 at the Warrior 18 with still more than a minute and a half to play.
