PBHS class of 2003 graduates Sunday years ago

Commencement ceremonies were held Sunday afternoon in the Brown Building for the 29 members of the Peabody-Burns High School class of 2003.

Nick Conquest was class valedictorian and Philip Unruh was salutatorian. Each addressed the capacity crowd of family, friends, and fellow students.

School board members Peggy Phillips and James Hoffman presented the diplomas.

Awards and scholarships were presented to the students by Warren Slocombe, Preston Hodges, Jake Lenz, Dorothy Rucker, and Gilbert Loewen.

Casey Berger and Nick Conquest received the Kansas State High School Activities Association good citizenship awards.

Awards from the Peabody Alumni Association were presented to Nick Conquest ($1,500), Philip Unruh ($1,500), and Rachel Berns ($1,000).

Mallory Whitney and Brennan Commerford each received a George E. Trimble Trust Fund Award in the amount of $1,000 each.

Nick Conquest was the recipient of the Alumni Dance Scholarship in the amount of $500. Conquest also was awarded the Burns Lions Club award.

The George Holm Memorial Award of $500 went to Nolan Hurst and the VFW award of $100 went to Jay Gfeller for his winning essay in the "Voice of Democracy" competition.

A new Kiwanis award, the Presidential Freedom Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 was given to Philip Unruh.

School board member Gilbert Loewen presented the scholarships selected by the district board. The Barrett Memorial Award went to Philip Unruh, the Masonic/Farr Award to Brennan Commerford, the Fred and Teresa Burdorf Award to Rachel Berns, the Fitch Memorial Award to Nick Conquest, the Gladys Heart Memorial Award to Mallory Whitney, and three Mable Jensen Awards to Mike Cullinane, Casey Berger, and Kacey Ferren.

A reception for the entire class was held after the ceremony.
