PBHS boys earn regional cross country title, will run at state

Peabody High School cross country team traveled Saturday to Lake Afton for its regional cross country race. Eight runners qualified for a trip Saturday to the state meet at Wamego.
The boys' team took first place in the meet with a score of 51, and the girls' team finished fourth with a score of 102.
Andrew Topham led the team with a first-place finish with a 5K time of 16 minutes, 33 seconds. Duane Unruh ran eighth with a time of 18:25. Other finishers included Jacob Wolf 11th, Ryan Wiebe 20th, Robert Rossberg 22nd, Kendall Wiebe 26th, and Ethan Riggs 37th.
Alyssa Carter earned a trip to state for the girls' team coming in sixth with a two-mile time of 13:54. Other runners included Ashley Elliott 25th, Jennifer Schmeling 30th, Jacqueline Benjamin 48th, Samantha Pickens 50th, and Erica Fredereick 52nd.
"Both squads ran very well," head coach Tony Zappone said. "Considering the challenge of the course at Lake Afton, I was extremely pleased with their performance."
