Owner asks county for assistance

Rural Marion resident Nancy Marr expressed concerns Monday to Marion County Commission regarding required improvements to her residence.

Marr explained she was ready to leave her home because she no longer can afford to own it.

A lagoon system was installed by a contractor who, according to Marr, took advantage of her. She also was concerned about the lagoon system being allowed to be built with storm drains hooked up to the lagoon system.

The home is the former poor farm and is a limestone structure that was built more than 100 years ago. Mar said she and her family have owned it since the 1970s but no one lived full-time at the residence until 2000.

If electricity should go off and significant rainfall occurs, Marr said storm and wastewater could flood her home. It would require more contracted labor to separate drainage from the sewer system.

Commission members expressed their concern but said there wasn't anything they could do to assist her.

Prior to Mars's presence at the meeting, current county sanitarian Bobbi Strait said a lagoon system was designed to accommodate the 30-room facility for more occupancy than a typical household.

Floor drains in the century-old house drain to the sewer system. Another issue was the lagoon was actually constructed on property that is not owned by Marr. A lot split and purchasing of the property are pending, Strait said.
