Open letter to vandals

To the Editor:

A few weeks ago, Tom and I, along with Debra Buser, spent a couple of afternoons decorating the Santa Fe Park for Christmas. This was our second year to plan and initiate the annual Peabody Christmas parade for the Main Street organization. We decorate the park because we feel it's sort of an extension of the atmosphere and ambiance that we try to create in anticipation of the parade. We spent approximately 10 hours and much of the money allotted to produce the parade. When we were finished and stood back to look at the results of our effort we were delighted. That delight has turned into disgust. The display at Santa Fe Park has been trashed by vandals. The remainder of this letter is addressed to them:

I don't understand you. You and I are very different. I am a giver and you are a taker. In fact, you are a thief. You not only steal light bulbs and extension cords, you rob others of the enjoyment that these kinds of displays bring to them at this season. I am a builder and you are a destroyer. At this time of the year when it's possible to see so much goodness and generosity in the human race, you have to remind us of all that is wrong with our society. It's very difficult to understand your motives for tearing down what other people have lovingly built. I care very much about the quality of life in Peabody. You apparently don't care very much about anyone but yourself. Well, I guess you win this round, Santa Fe Park is dark and unadorned and I am very deeply disappointed.
