Only county FCE unit dissolves after 70 years years ago
The only group of Family and Community Education (FCE) in Marion County dissolved recently after receiving a 70th year award in September 2005.
The club originally was Youngtown Home Demonstration Unit (HDU), later became an Extension Homemakers Unit (EHU), and ended its run as Youngtown FCE.
Unit members who still were active included Judy Christensen of Marion, Betty Ireland of Florence, Darlene Schmidt of Hillsboro, and Gertie Mahoney of Newton.
With the dissolution of Youngtown FCE, treasury funds were used to purchase books for Marion City Library.
Books include "Getting Old Ain't for Wimps," "Help Lord, I'm Having a Senior Moment," "Beautiful Threads," "Quilted with Love," "God's Promises A to Z," "Your Best Life Now," "Then Sings My Soul," "Angels in Fur," "Clopper, the Christmas Donkey," "Roadside Americana," "History of the American Auto," and 2005 KAFCE Cookbook.
Youngtown group

Youngtown FCE members Judy Christensen, Betty Ireland, and Darlene Schmidt met Jan. 10 at Country Lakes Café, Marion, for a lunch meeting.
Later they visited Roseva McLinden at Marion Assisted Living. The women enjoyed an afternoon of visiting and reminiscing about taking meals to the fields for the men.
They signed cards for members Lorene Smith on her 90th birthday and Marge Rediger on her 76th birthday.
