Nominees sought for district court judge

A nominating commission, charged with naming candidates to fill a district judge vacancy in the Eighth Judicial District, has issued a request for assistance from the public.

The district includes the counties of Marion, Dickinson, Geary, and Morris.

The nine-member commission is responsible for submitting names of two or three nominees to the Governor to fill the vacancy which will be created by the retirement of District Judge Larry Bengtson.

Kansas statutes require a judge be a resident of the district in which selected, be at least 30 years of age, has been in the active practice of law for at least five years, and admitted to the practice of law within the State of Kansas.

Suggested nominees are requested to complete questionnaires for the position. The completed forms must be returned no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 17 to Victor A. Davis Jr., secretary, 819 N. Washington, P.O. Box 187, Junction City KS 66441. Forms are available in district clerk offices in the four counties.

The nominating commission will convene at 9 a.m. Dec. 1 in the Geary County Courthouse to interview the suggested nominees. The meeting will be open to the public but the commission has authority to adjourn to executive sessions to discuss personal traits of nominees.

The commission includes Justice Marla J. Luckert, non-voting chairman; Davis of Junction City, Kevin Fruechting and Edwin M. Wheeler Jr. of Marion, Darrel W. Bryant and C. Dale Rein of Council Grove, Douglas G. Thompson and Kevin O. Harris, Abilene, and Carolyn L. Gaston of Milford.
