New city treasurer appointed

Suzanne Robinson was hired Monday evening by the Florence City Council to fill the post of city treasurer. Former treasurer Dianne Burnett relinquished that portion of her position with the City of Florence when she moved outside the city limits. She will retain the rest of her duties in the city office.

Robinson's appointment was approved on a 3-0-l vote with Bev Baldwin abstaining.

Mayor Jeanie Meirowsky shared a letter from the City of Marion concerning the dumping Jan. 10 of a loaded Florence trash truck in a church parking lot. City employee Rick Burcky was on his way to the transfer station when a motorist flagged him down and told him there was smoke coming from the inside of the truck.

Burcky dumped the truck in the parking lot of the Marion Christian Church in an effort to keep it off the street and keep the fire from spreading.

The City of Marion indicated that in the future dumping smoking trash on the street would be its preference.

Meirowsky said the letter didn't state whether there was damage to the parking lot and she had not been informed of any damage to the trash truck.

She asked that any future incidents involving city personnel or city equipment be reported to the mayor and council members immediately. Meirowsky and the council agreed that early notification of such problems is preferable to reading about them in the newspaper.

No information was available on how the fire started. The trash was returned to Florence and stored in an enclosed area until it could be examined and approved for transport to the transfer station.

The Peabody Gazette-Bulletin was appointed the official newspaper of the city and the Cottonwood Valley Bank was appointed as the official bank. Both appointments are for the year 2003.

Councilmen were reminded of the open house scheduled for Feb. 3 for the new Florence city building.
