Nellans, Newfield receive diplomas
Two area veterans were awarded honorary diplomas Sunday during the Peabody-Burns High School 2004 commencement exercises.
Glenn Nellans and Rudy Newfield, both of Peabody, were presented diplomas by USD 398 board member and veteran James Hoffman. The men were given the honor in accordance with a program called "Operation Recognition," a proclamation signed by former Kansas Governor Bill Graves.
The proclamation makes it possible for veterans of World War II and the Korean conflict who had to leave high school to serve their country, to receive a diploma from their high school.
Many veterans never resumed their education when they returned home and Operation Recognition gives the veterans an honorary diploma and a thank-you from the state of Kansas for service to their country.
To date, more than 400 veterans have been recognized by school districts and the State of Kansas.
