Grab your bug spray, sunglasses, charcoal briquettes, and 50 cents for a cup of lemonade from your young neighborhood entrepreneurs
'Tis the season for sprinklers, grilling, baseball, swim meets, vacations, and family and class reunions. Before we know it, Peabody will be buzzing with the excitement that accompanies Peabody's classic celebration of the Fourth of July.
With so many upcoming events and activities, we hope to impress our guests with the best Peabody can offer.
Peabody Economic Development Council is hosting a "Neighborhood Beautification Contest" to all neighborhoods in Peabody. This applies to businesses and business districts as well.
The reward for your hard work is a block party barbecue. One winning block will be awarded a block party barbecue each month from June until September.
The winning block will have the street blocked off, and the Peabody Economic Development Council will cook and serve you a barbecue dinner. The dinner will be sponsored by Peabody Hardware, Peabody State Bank, Peabody Market, the City of Peabody, and the Peabody Main Street Association.
Every block in Peabody is eligible to win. A "block" includes both sides of one street block. Whether your block is maintaining a look that already is well polished, or you're improving the area in a significant way, your block is a great contestant to win the prize!
There are five anonymous judges for the contest. They remain anonymous even to each other. Each will submit his/her top three picks, and after the votes are tallied, the winning block will be announced in the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin.
Criteria to win the Block Party BBQ are:
— 1) grass mowed, neat and clean;
— 2) bushes and trees trimmed;
— 3) no appliances, junk, or debris in yards;
— 4) clean curbs and gutters;
— 5) no nuisance conditions;
— 6) or most improved in all of the above categories.
The judging and barbecue schedule is as follows
— June — Judging from June 25-27; winning barbecue, July 1.
— July — Judging from July 9-11; winning barbecue, July 22.
— August — Judging from Aug. 13-15; winning barbecue, Aug. 26.
— September — Judging from Sept. 4-6; winning barbecue, Sept. 15.
If you don't know your neighbors, this is a great opportunity to meet them! We hope this project spurs some goodwill and teamwork throughout our community in addition to making the town look better!
