Musical Christmas festival continues at Tabor College

Music of the Christmas season can be heard at the Tabor College Christmas Festival at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Point Hillsboro. Also, the Tabor College Community Chorale and Tabor College Handbell Choir will perform their Christmas concert at the church at 7 p.m. Monday.

Both performances are free and open to the public.

The songfest began this past Sunday when the Tabor College Concert Choir and Community Orchestra presented Handel's Messiah, conducted by Dr. Brad Vogel, associate professor of choral music.

Featured soloists were Kayla Vix, Dr. Holly Swartzendruber, and Elise Hiebert (sopranos); Ashley Siler (alto); Matthew Schloneger (tenor), and Dr. Jonah Kliewer (bass).

Sunday's annual Christmas Festival will feature the Symphonic Band, Brass Ensemble, and Concert Choir performing traditional Christmas music and will feature trumpet soloists Andrew Toews and Eric Funk, as well as soprano Dr. Swartzendruber, assistant professor of voice at Tabor College. The concert will conclude with Mack Wilberg's setting of the traditional English carol, "I Saw Three Ships," which will include the Tabor College Handbell Choir and Dr. Sheila Schmitt and Stephen Vincent on piano.

Monday's concert marks the inaugural performance of the 36-voice Tabor College Community Chorale, accompanied by piano, organ, harp, oboe, and flute. The Tabor College Handbell Choir will lend its unique sound to traditional Christmas repertoire.
