Museum committee reports July 4 fund-raiser total

Pauline McPheeters, chairmen of the fireworks committee of the Peabody Historical Society, reports that about $1,500 was cleared on the Fourth of July selling event.

Many townspeople contributed hours and hours of work in the tent that had to be manned around the clock. McPheeters says "never again," but other board members felt it was a good learning experience that could be modified another year.

Many prospective buyers had to be turned away due to the 8 p.m. deadline of selling time. The council is studying time changes for future selling hours.

It is hoped that work can resume again on the 1904 barn behind the Morgan House. Old barn wood, which will somewhat match the existing wood, is needed to provide working wood for repairs. Both wide barn boards and old batting are needed for the project.

The new screen doors at the Morgan House and a new American flag at the museum are tangible evidence of memorial donations. These items were purchased from the Pat Wood memorial funds.

Peabody Hardware special-ordered the screens, which included wheelchair access-size at the rear door. Mark Whitney hung the doors. Pauline McPheeters primed and painted the doors which add a Victorian touch to the house.

Wood often gave of his time and talents to the historical society and the much-needed screen doors will be constant reminders of his help.

The fall newsletter will pay tribute to old barns. If you have a great, old barn to recommend (preferably in the Peabody vicinity) please contact Marilyn Jones or Janet Hamous this week. Current plans are to photograph barns Aug. 25 and 26.

Homestead Press has provided a printed menu for the gourmet meals served to visitors. The cover of the menu is a sketch of the Morgan House and the ink is colored-coordinated to the dining room.
