Moundridge Wildcats scratch Warriors from sub-state list
Staff writer
The Peabody-Burns Warriors came up short in the first round of sub-state play, bringing their season to an end. Playing the well-prepared Moundridge Wildcats for the second time in two weeks, the PBHS Warriors lost, giving the team a 12-9 record overall.
The scoring started early for the Warriors with a short jumper from Daniel Unruh. A fast first quarter brought rough play on both sides. The quarter ended with the Warriors putting a Wildcat on the free throw-line with no time on the clock. The Wildcats pulled ahead by two, 10-8.
A tough second quarter saw the Warriors trying to dig out as Moundridge extended its lead. The Wildcats' control of the boards made it tough for the PBHS squad.
The Warriors were able to come back however from a 10-point deficit to within four with scoring from only two Warriors. Grant Klingenberg scored nine, including one three and Philip Unruh scored five, including one three. PBHS went to the locker room at the half down by four, 22-26.
The Warriors came out of the locker room and went to work. Jared Lopez shot two free-throws to give the Warriors the lead early in the period, 27-26. The teams went back and forth, but the Warriors managed to keep the edge at the buzzer, ending the quarter, 34-31, on a long two by Philip Unruh.
The fourth quarter was a bad one for the PBHS squad. Two senior Warriors, Grant Klingenberg and Steven Morgan, went to the bench with five fouls. The Wildcats, subbing in at every possession, made it hard to get anything going. The Warriors just couldn't stay close to the Wildcats and were defeated 57-45.
