Morgan family enjoys sharing Peabody roots

"Meeting all of them and hearing them piece together their family history was absolutely wonderful," said Peabody Historical Society president Marilyn Jones of the Morgan family descendants who spent several days in Peabody during the past week.

The group represented the families of both William H. Morgan (founder and editor of the Peabody Gazette) and his wife Arthemise.

"Many of them had never met, but I think they will stay in touch after this," she added. "It was so nice to have them here and they certainly seemed to enjoy themselves."

Jones didn't have an exact count of how many actually showed up, but she thought there were probably several dozen.

"We gave tours all day on Thursday. They toured the Morgan House and the museums," she said. "On Friday many of them went to Osage City to do some genealogy work and look at the cemetery there."

Peabody Historical Society members served 23 members of the family a meal at the Morgan House Saturday evening, following a full day of visiting and taking notes and pictures at the senior center.

The historical society was presented with a framed hand-written letter from William Morgan to his family when he went off to war.

"They were a lively and enjoyable bunch," said Jones. "I'd like to see them come back again."
