Missing 10 free throws became a factor Jan. 31 in Goessel High School girls' basketball team's loss to Moundridge.

The Goessel girls were within one point with 14 seconds to play in the game. A couple of free throws would have made a big difference.

Moundridge hit a layup and two free throws of its own to ice the game on 41-36.

The Bluebirds led by two at the end of the first quarter and the game was tied 16-16 at halftime. The Wildcats took a three-point lead at the end of third period, but the Bluebirds stayed close until the end.

With the loss GHS falls to 6-9.

"We have been beating the teams that we should be beating," coach Brian Holloway said. "Now we need to surprise a team and pick up an unexpected win."

Kory Hiebert led all scorers with 13 points, and Courtney Berkholz added 10. Rinda Duerksen had seven, while Katie Flaming, Trenae Wilson, and Brittany Dirksen each had two points.

The Bluebirds were 2-12 from the free-throw line.

Goessel girls also missed 10 free throws Friday but the game ended up being close enough to make a huge difference.

A dry spell in the third quarter, doomed the Bluebirds as they went from a seven-point lead at the end of the second period to a nine-point deficit at the end of the third period.

Remington defeated the Bluebirds 40-29 at Goessel's homecoming game.

"Nothing went in for us (in the third quarter) and everything started going in for them," Holloway said.

Hiebert scored 12 and Berkholz 11, Duerksen three, Flaming two, and Wilson one.

Goessel played Tuesday at Ell-Saline and comes home Friday for a game with Canton-Galva.

The girls are now 2-6 in the Heart of America League, and 6-10 overall, with three league games to play.
