Memories of spring events in Peabody
By MARY AVERY
PHS class of 1967, PMSA president
Spring is a special season — a season of anticipation, renewal, hope, remembrance, and new beginnings.
It is a busy and happy time as we look forward to proms, family gatherings to celebrate Easter, Mother's Day, graduations, and Memorial Day.
When the lilac bushes bloom each year my husband Shreves remembers the junior-senior prom of 1963. The theme was "Moon River."
The juniors spent a week behind the closed and locked doors of the gymnasium in the old high school, planning and decorating for the special evening.
The junior class boys adjourned to the country to dig up lilac bushes in bloom to sit in front of the open windows for the crowning touch.
Etiquette and protocol were drilled into the sophomores chosen to serve at the banquet.
The anticipation of both the attendees and the class presenting the gala event provided an air of excitement to the school week.
The eighth grade class would enjoy the decor the following Monday at the annual eighth grade dance.
Each spring brings back warm memories and smiles as the annual traditions continue here at our high school.
Graduation is a time of achievement and new beginnings. Peabody Main Street is proud of our promotion committee chairman Peggy Radisewitz-Weir who is graduating in May from Kansas Newman University with a degree in respiratory therapy.
Peggy's enthusiasm, dedication, energy, laughter, and leadership have made a difference to the board and the community.
Peggy's new beginning will be in Kansas City with a new career and life. We will miss her, but wish her well. Thank you, Peggy.
When you alumni come to the annual Memorial Day dinner prepared by the sophomore class, don't forget to stop by the Main Street table and share one or two of YOUR memories with us.
We will have the newest commemorative Christmas ornament for sale featuring the Sunflower Theater. Also available will be membership information and our new community brochure. We look forward to seeing you!
