Memories enrich the present

By Mary Avery

Main Street Assn. President

The theme of our Christmas parade is "Home for the Holidays." For me, that brings to mind Christmases past with all family traditions and memories.

Do you remember the Christmas lights on the water tower? How about the Christmas tree at the First and Walnut Street intersection?

Did you shop at Walker's for the perfect gift for a friend, or Peabody Hardware and Lumber for a Baby Ben alarm clock for Mom?

The arrival of Christmas trees at Ross' IGA signaled the beginning of Christmas decorating.

Are you one of the generations of youngsters who remember being visited by Peabody's own Santa, Jesse Seibel?

Remembrance of Christmases past brings feelings of warmth, security, and happiness. It is in remembering the past that our present is enriched.

Our Christmas season begins with the Christmas parade, the lighting of the downtown Christmas lights, and fireworks. These events soon will become a part of the fabric of our memories and traditions.

This year as you look back on your own Peabody holiday memories, consider beginning a new holiday tradition and become a member of the Peabody Main Street Association.

Our mission is to ensure Peabody continues to grow and thrive while preserving its historic character through the involvement of the community.

Your membership is an opportunity to be a part of our shared and special history.

Wishing you all wonderful holiday memories.
