Making cents
The time is drawing near for voters in Florence to make a decision that could influence the future of the city.
In Tuesday's election, Florence residents will decide if a one percent city sales tax should be implemented.
The tax would be paid by everyone purchasing retail goods and services in Florence.
Most will not notice the increase of one cent for every dollar of purchases.
It will not keep anyone from purchasing groceries, beer, cigarettes, or plumbing services.
This isn't a quick-fix option. It may take several years before sufficient funds are collected to make a difference in the city's budget.
This isn't going to save the city or destroy it.
What it will do is become the groundwork for future improvements and development in Florence.
Other cities within the county that collect city sales tax are Hillsboro and Marion.
Hillsboro's funds are earmarked for streets. Marion's funds are for economic development endeavors including improvements to the city's industrial park.
Providing additional revenue to the city without raising property taxes or utilities makes sense.
