Main Street Messenger: Design committee welcomes volunteers

By JOANNA BRAZIL

Director

Peabody Main Street Association welcomes Jeanne Strotkamp to both the board of directors and as chairman of the design committee. Design is one of the four points of concentration in the Main Street approach to downtown revitalization. Its concentration includes physical aspects of our community in upkeep, beautification, and historic preservation. A streetscape project already has been slotted as a future design project, but in the meantime, Jeanne and the newly-formed design committee have many other projects to tackle.

You may have noticed the flowers up and down Main Street. Getting the street prepared for our Fourth of July guests was a design project. I'd like to thank all of the businesses and citizens who took time to weed sidewalks, pick up trash, plant and water flowers, and to the city for painting the street lines in anticipation of our Fourth Fest visitors.

It is important we demonstrate pride in this community by doing extras to make positive first impressions to Peabody visitors. They may be future residents and/or businesses.

The design committee's next project is to clean and repair the facade of the senior center buildings. The senior center continues to be an important facility for our local senior citizens and community members. Interior design projects also are in the works for the senior center, but will require community support in funds and labor. If you are interested in contributing funds or assistance to the Senior Center Project, please contact me at (620) 983-2174, e-mail pmsa@peabodyks.com or contact the senior center at (620) 983-2226.

Peabody Main Street is a volunteer driven organization that is working diligently to see that Peabody continues to grow and thrive. I always am so impressed by the hours of volunteer time, funds, and energy given generously by citizens in Peabody who care about this community's future. One does not have to be on a committee to invest in a bright future for Peabody. In fact, anyone and everyone can join the effort by simply picking up trash you may see as you walk around town. If you see a weed, pull it! If you see a stranger, smile at him or her! It does not take much to make a first rate impression. I encourage you to remember the nice touches you notice when visiting other communities and do your part to see them here.
