Main Street benefit auction is Saturday

Discount offers from local businesses, a four-hour pontoon boat cruise for four (lunch included) on Marion County waters, Peabody souvenir items and memorabilia, framed photos of early days, a chance to name the circle drive and sports complex at Peabody City Park, and much more are awaiting successful bidders at the Peabody Main Street benefit auction March 10 at the American Legion Hall.

The auction will be preceded by a steak feed and the always rowdy "To-Die-For Dessert Auction." The meal will begin at 6 p.m., the auction at 8 p.m.

"We've had some pretty unique items delivered in recent days," said Main Street director Kristen Hooper. "A work coat from DeForest Hatcheries has been donated. It's a real oldie! And Stephanie Ax contributed one of her elegant Victorian hats.

"A cloth feed sack from Moffett Mills in Peabody was brought in along with an old Christian Church cookbook, some Peabody Centennial items, and Peabody belt buckles."

The circle drive and the sports complex at the city park will need new names once again. The high bidder will be able to name either, Main Street will purchase the sign and have it installed. It will remain in place for a year and then be returned to the person who named it. Most recently the sports complex was named for former coach Bob Coffman and the circle drive for Pat Wood.

Harvey Grosse has built a bench that will be a wonderful addition for anyone's yard or garden area. A 1968 school calendar with photos (who ARE those people?) also will be sold.

A large framed photo of the Santa Fe Depot taken by John Wolfersperger will make another appearance this year. The print was donated to the last auction by Kris Wolfersperger Carswell from her mother's estate.

"The person who bought it last time decided to put it back into circulation so someone else could enjoy it," said Hooper.
