Lucretia Gates

Lucretia Maria Gates, 98, of Falls City, died July 10, 2004, at Falls City Care Center.

Born March 5, 1906, in rural Peabody, she was a daughter of Joseph and Hansigne (Olsen) Hall.

She grew up in the Peabody area, graduating from Peabody High School. She attended Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha, Okla. She taught in a country school in Marion County.

On Sept. 2, 1928, she married Silas Gates. He died in 1964.

Lucretia was an Avon dealer for 21 years. She was a life member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association and Kansas State Rabbit Breeders Association. She was an active member of the Kaw Valley Rabbit Club, Progressive Rabbit Club, Kansas City and Salt Creek Rabbit Club, and the American Chinchilla Specialty Club. She published the Specialty Club's newsletter for many years.

She also was a 25-year-plus member of Eastern Star in Lyons and a charter member of Ne-Mo-Ka Craft Guild at Falls City, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Geneva; an infant son; half-brothers and half-sisters; and one granddaughter.

She is survived by daughter Cora "Hanna" Shafter, two granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Saturday at Falls City, Neb. Inurnment will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
