Look what's happening in downtown Peabody
We have some fresh faces in Peabody! These faces have been watching the people of Peabody for many years. They watched the streets as horses and buggies brought farmers and workers in the oil fields into town for food and supplies, entertainment, haircuts, medicine, and good conversation. Many of them still are here today to watch us now as we roll downtown for food, supplies, gifts, entertainment, haircuts, home accessories, medicine, and good conversation. These buildings have lived long lives in downtown Peabody (many more than 100 years) and continue to live because our community has chosen to preserve them as well as the stories, character, and charm that accompany them.
Recently, many downtown businesses have been busy freshening up the facades on their buildings.
Jackrabbit Hollow, a unique bookstore that sells gifts, flowers, and gourmet coffees and teas among other things, has a new awning and recently painted facade. Local seamstress Susie (Pierce) Schmidt made the awning.
Walking up the steps to enjoy a meal at Sharon's Korner Kitchen is much easier now. Peabody State Bank replaced the well-traveled steps leading to the cafe with new limestone, set for another century of travel.
Duke and Beth Eldridge have removed the wooden covering from their building's façade to unveil the windows underneath. The building houses two of their businesses, Kansas Radiation Physics and Country Bunny Bath and Body. They are in search of historic photos of the "Bragunier/Otte Building" to assist in an appropriate restoration of the building. If you have historic photos of this building, please contact the Eldridges or Joanna Brazil at (620) 983-9251.
Mayesville Mercantile, Peabody Hardware and Lumber, and Cameo Rose also have recently painted their facades.
Peabody Lanes continues to evolve. Owners Mike and Cheryl Berger have been busy painting, remodeling, and updating the bowling alley in the past year. Peabody Lanes is available for private bowling parties and there are some openings left for league bowlers on Thursday and/or Sunday evenings. For more information about hosting your own bowling party or to join a league, contact Mike and Cheryl Berger at (620) 983-2160, 983-2012, or 983-2072.
Peabody Market continues to remodel, increase inventory and services, and expand the facilities. If you haven't visited the market recently, it is worth a visit.
