License holders now can carry concealed handguns

Kansans now can carry concealed weapons.

Beginning Jan. 1, those residents who applied and were approved for licenses, received license notices. Those approved now must go to a state driver's license station to receive the actual concealed carry license.

Locally, there were 25 residents who applied for the permit. Statewide there were 4,795 applications and 2,981 were sent license notices.

The licenses are valid for four years.

Those carrying the license are required to respond to law enforcement officers when asked if they are licensed to carry a concealed handgun. Kansas Department of Motor Vehicle will reveal concealed carry licenses when license checks are conducted.

Those with the special license either can have it marked on their drivers' licenses or have a separate card.

Concealed handguns are not allowed in numerous locations that include schools, churches, courthouses, and professional athletic events.

Other stores and offices may post signs to prohibit weapons.

Applications are available through the local sheriff's office or online through the attorney general's web site. The completed application must be submitted at the sheriff's office in the county in which the applicant resides. There is a $150 application fee and a minimum of eight hours of training.

Nearby state drivers' license offices are located in McPherson, Emporia, and Salina. A fee of $15 will be charged to produce the card or make changes to driver's licenses.
