Library group receives $5,000 grant years ago

The SBC Foundation presented a $5,000 grant Nov. 11 to the Friends of the Whitewater Memorial Library to support its automation system. The grant was provided through the SBC Excelerator competitive technology grants program, which is the signature giving program of the SBC Foundation.

With this grant, the library will purchase three computers that will serve as an automation system to handle circulation, the library catalog, and networking.

The new system will improve record keeping and, in the future, enable the library to interface with the Remington school district libraries.

Library patrons who may not have a home computer will have a chance to experience the benefits of advanced technology, and the library will become an even greater resource for home schoolers.

"The grant from SBC will help us improve our service to the community for the 21st century, by replacing our old fashioned card catalog with an automated system," said Scott Martin, chairman of Friends of Whitewater Memorial Library. "We are very grateful for SBC's assistance in helping us reach these goals."

Friends of the Whitewater Memorial Library is one of 21 Kansas nonprofit organizations selected to receive a grant through the 2003 SBC Excelerator program. The SBC Foundation will award more than $200,000 to Kansas organizations this year to further projects that use advanced technology to build stronger communities throughout the state.
