LETTERS TO EDITOR: Go Big Blue!
In last week's issue of the Gazette-Bulletin, Koni Jones wrote a letter to the editor about our lack of school pride and spirit. The gal pretty much hit the old nail on the head.
As a Peabody High School grad (and please no snickering) from back then in the "dark ages," I can say that school pride and spirit were very "cool" things.
We had our Pep Club made up of students, pep band, parents, etc. These people were involved before, during, and sometimes after the game. It was never a question of whether to cheer or not cheer your team on to V-I-C-T-O-R-Y. It was just what one did, no questions asked!
Yes, some of us may have yelled louder, gotten a bit more into the moment. So what? The cheerleaders need to hear you as do the players and coaches. Go Big Blue!!
See, didn't that "Go Big Blue" feel good? Try it a little bit louder at the next game or event.
Now for page two (a little Paul Harvey humor there) — the "On Peabody" (to the tune of "On Wisconsin") music; hang to your hats folks. News flash! We students used to actually not only stand when it was played, but there were words we sang, too!
To this day I still sing those words to our school song and most often get strange looks and usually several comments like, "I didn't know there were words to that."
Hmmmm, I know I'm not alone in this feeling of surprise at what's happened — no one sings the words anymore. Amazing!
So anyway, people, support the students, school, our community. It does a body good!
