Residents urged to attend benefit

To the Editor:

When I first became involved in the campaign to raise funds for the thermal imaging camera, I thought it was a good idea. Since then, through good old-fashioned research and asking the right questions, I have to say I am convinced it is imperative that the campaign succeed.

Oh, I know that some would suggest that the fire department has done without it all this time, so what's the big deal? Others might say Peabody has more pressing needs, that people just have to be more careful not to let controlled burns get out of hand, or smoke in bed, or be more watchful of pots on the stove, and so on. Accept it, its part of being human that none of us is perfect. In our imperfection we do things that compromise our good intentions.

The time to act in our own best interest is now. A friend reminded me recently that everyone seems to have a hand out these days. Everyone has a charity that is more pressing than the other guy's. And let us not forget that sometimes we are remiss in returning good will to Peabody's merchants when we don't shop in the same stores we so boldly ask donations from. Think about it.

This Saturday the thermal imaging camera committee will present a benefit supper, silent auction, and bake sale. I urge everyone to come a little earlier than the 5 p.m. start time to get a look at the silent auction items.

We think you'll be impressed at the number and quality of items that were donated for the auction. Even Gladys Mann, who many Peabody citizens will remember, has a quilt she made in the line-up (generously donated by Bev Wilson).

As feasible, fire trucks, ambulances, and with some luck, a rescue helicopter will be on hand. Maybe the kid in you will finally get the chance to ring the bell. You know you want to.

The menu will be out of this world, thanks to all the fine people of the various churches in town. But then, it's fried chicken — so what's not to like?

Please come out to Peabody-Burns Elementary School this Saturday night and enjoy some good food, good friends, and maybe a little treasure hunting. The supper is by goodwill donation only. All proceeds will go to the thermal imaging cameral fund.

Thanks to all who helped.
