Letter: Former student recalls high school days

To the Editor:

Thanks for sending me the Sept. 6, 2006, copy of the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin. I appreciate it and it does keep me in touch with my hometown.

I graduated from Peabody High School in 1935. I was delayed two years to take over the farm so my elder brother, Melvin, could get a little money ahead. After two years Melvin decided he would like to return home and again take over the responsibility for the home place, so I was free to complete my studies at PHS.

Superintendent H.H. Brown announced publicly that there would be a poetry contest especially for the senior class. I decided to try my hand in writing a poem in honor of PHS and the class of 1935. It is a long one and likely too long to publish. I won the contest and it was published in the PHS paper. That was 71 years ago, May 21, 1935.

The Gazette of today is a positive reflection of a town that is alive and vigorous. The Hub is one example of a town catering to local needs with enthusiasm.

In closing, I wish to say how much I appreciated my years at PHS learning science, math, English language and literature, history, industrial arts, psychology, and civics. It was a valuable four years with capable, friendly teachers.
