Peabody-Burns Lady Warriors opened their volleyball season Sept. 3 with two impressive wins over Newton Junior Varsity and Newton Christian School.

The PBHS squad, coached by first-year coach Darrin Schroeder, has a strong contingent of juniors and help from foreign exchange student, Eve Benyusova.

The first match for the squad was against Newton's junior varsity team. Both games were dominated by the Lady Warriors' good team play.

In the second game of the match, the team had the Lady Railers down 11-0 before a Railer score. The Lady Warriors defeated the Newton junior varsity team, 15-3 and 15-2.

Gretchen Berns had three kills and three blocks. Marie Unruh had four kills, two blocks, and three assists. Sandra McLeod had three aces.

The second match of the evening pitted the Lady Warriors against Newton Christian School. Again the Lady Warriors dominated play and Coach Schroeder rotated the players liberally.

Ashley Miller had four aces and two assists. Marie Unruh had nine assists and Sandra McLeod had three kills. Peabody defeated Newton, 15-4 and 15-4.

"I was really happy with the transition play of the team," stated coach Darrin Schroeder. "They did an excellent job going from offense to defense. They really focused on relentless pursuit, not letting the ball hit the floor."

"I was also happy with their serves. This is a great group of girls to work with."

The team travels to Goessel Tuesday to play Pretty Prairie and Remington in two key league match-ups.
