Lady Warriors take fifth at Berean tournament

Peabody-Burns High School girls' basketball team came in fifth in a field of eight at the Eli J. Walter basketball tournament in Elbing.
The Lady Warriors were defeated, 47-29, in the first round by host team Berean Academy. In the second round, the Lady Warriors defeated Derby Home School, 44-38. But the third round brought a second loss as the girls lost to Goessel, 35-23.
The team was scheduled to play Tuesday at Moundridge before their homecoming game Friday against Little River.
In the Berean contest, the Lady Warriors were shut out in the first quarter as Berean held the edge, 7-0.
Jessica Gillet scored first for the Lady Warriors in the second quarter. Tiana McGee had three and Jessi Hilliard had two free throws, but the Berean squad led at the half, 19-7.
Better play on defense and offense closed the gap in the third. The Lady Warriors scored 14, led by Hilliard with eight points. Kate Topham added six. PBHS ended the third quarter, 32-21.
Fourth quarter scoring opened with a trey from Elaina Newell. Hilliard added three free throws. Topham and McGee each contributed a free throw. PBHS could not overcome the big deficit in the first half and lost to Berean, 47-29.

Derby Invasion
Lady Warriors struggled early on offense against the Derby Home School Invasion.
The PBHS girls had eight in the first. Newell hit a three, Traci Windsor and Kali Alstrom each had two. The Invasion had the lead at the end of one, 11-8.
PBHS scored eight more in the second. Gillet, Hilliard, Newell, and McGee each had a basket. Derby put up 10 for the lead, 21-16, at the half.
Alstrom put in two early in the third to spark a Lady Warrior scoring run. PBHS put up 15 in the period with Alstrom pacing the team with nine. Hilliard had four and Newell had two. The Invasion had a three-point edge in the third, 34-31.
PBHS defense swarmed the Invasion in the fourth to hold them to four in the period. Lady Warriors put in 13 to claim the lead and the victory in the fourth, 44-38. Hilliard scored eight, including six free throws. Gillet put in four and Alstrom added a free throw.

Goessel Bluebirds
Lady Warriors held their own in the first period of round three play against the Goessel Bluebirds. Newell hit a three, Alstrom added two, and Hilliard put in a free throw. PBHS was down by two at the end of the first quarter, 8-6.
PBHS offense struggled in the second with only one basket from McGee and three free throws, one each from Alstrom, Newell, and Hilliard. The Bluebirds were up 18-11 at the half.
PBHS defense held the Bluebirds to seven in the period. The offense, however, only put seven on the scoreboard. Hilliard had four. Newell added a three. Lady Warriors were down, 25-18, at the end of the third.
For PBHS, Hilliard added three and Windsor put in two free throws in the fourth. The Bluebirds added 10 and took the third round win, 35-23.
