Lady Warriors take Berean in overtime

Staff writer

The battle of the two Lady Warrior teams was a contest of good ball handling and outside shooting. The first quarter was fast paced with a minimum of mistakes. All the starters put points on the board. The quarter ended with the PBHS squad up by two, 19-17.

Outside shooting by Berean lit up the score board, but the PBHS Warriors answered the offensive assault and led by one at the half, 30-29.

They stretched the lead in the third period. Casey Berger hit three treys and the PBHS Warriors were in front by six at the end of the third quarter, 47-41.

The inside game opened up in the fourth with Gretchen Berns dumping in nine points. The teams went basket-for-basket down the stretch.

Second-half defense, led by Jana Windsor, helped get the Berean outside attack under control, but the teams were even at the end of regulation, 66-66.

The PBHS squad, fighting foul trouble and fatigue, held tough in the extra period and pulled out a big win, 71-67.

"It's better to win ugly, than lose pretty," stated Coach Kevin Washington. "Our team had good composure. We were up by seven and should've put the game away, but we held on. Berean did a great job, and we did a great job keeping pace offensively with their outside game.
