Lady Warriors lose two, take tourney win

The Lady Warriors had a full slate of basketball this past week.

At Burrton on Jan. 6, the Peabody-Burns squad was defeated in double overtime, 57-55. On Friday at Moundridge, the Lady Warriors suffered another loss 49-41.

They traveled to Tescott Saturday and were victorious over Tescott 56-32. Up next for the PBHS women are two league match-ups at home with Sedgwick on Tuesday and Little River on Friday.

At Burrton, the Lady Warriors had some trouble in the first quarter on offense. The Lady Chargers scored first in the contest. Marie Unruh opened the scoring for the PBHS squad with a trey. The deficit for the Lady Warriors was seven at the end of the first period, 16-9.

In the second, the Lady Warriors remained slow on offensive production generating only 10 points. The defense, however held the Lady Chargers to nine and the margin was six at the half, 25-19. Gretchen Berns led the second quarter scoring with five points.

Dalli Hammond helped ignite the Lady Warriors after the break, scoring 11 in the third. Defensively, the team did a good job controlling the Lady Chargers. Hammond pulled the team to within one point of the Burrton squad with three free throws at the end of the quarter, 40-39.

The defense held the Lady Chargers to seven in the fourth period. A three by Jana Windsor late in the game tied the score at 47, and put the contest into overtime.

Both teams fought hard in the first overtime with tough defense. The Lady Chargers took a three-point lead, 52-49, late in the period. Unruh took a last second three that banked in to put the game into a second overtime, 52-52.

Burrton again took the lead adding four to the total, 56-52. Berns added two to make the difference a basket. Burrton put in a free throw as did Shannon Welsh for the Lady Warriors, 57-55. A last second attempt by Windsor missed the mark and the Lady Warriors were defeated in double overtime, 57-55.

At Moundridge, both teams took on a defensive role early, but offense for the Lady Warriors was slow. Gretchen Berns put in four and Shannon Welsh added two. The PBHS squad was down by three, 9-6, at the end of the first period.

While play improved on offense, the ball just wouldn't fall for the Lady Warriors. They tied the Wildcats at 15, but pulled away before the half, 20-15. Jana Windsor and Berns each had three in the quarter.

Turnovers were big in the third quarter with the Lady Warriors still struggling on offense. The quarter ended with the Wildcats up by 10, 34-24.

The fourth was a good one for the Peabody-Burns team, but it was too late. While the Lady Warriors put 17 on the board the Wildcats came up with the victory, 49-41.

On Saturday the Lady Warriors traveled to Tescott to finish the Bennington Tournament.

The Lady Warriors came out cold, but picked up the offense before the end of the quarter. Dalli Hammond led the Lady Warriors with two three-point shots. The PBHS squad went up 13-7.

In the second, the Lady Warriors defensive pressure created some problems for the Tescott team. Gretchen Berns put in eight in the quarter. Hammond made five and Jana Windsor added two. The Lady Warriors led at the half, 28-15.

Defense came up big in the third dominating the Tescott team and holding them to six points. Five Lady Warriors got on the scoreboard in the period to give the PBHS squad a big edge, 41-21 at the end of the third.

More of the same from the Lady Warriors made for a good fourth quarter and the victory over Tescott, 56-32. Many of the reserves played throughout the quarter and the Lady Warriors took their fifth win of the season.

At the completion of the tournament, both the varsity and junior varsity girl's teams placed first.
