Staff writer

The Peabody-Burns High School girls' basketball team earned a first seed sub-state placing this past week with two league victories.

The Lady Warriors defeated Central Christian Tuesday, 60-30. Traveling to Ell-Saline, they came up with a victory, 42-29.

The Lady Warriors' offense came out slow against the Central Christian squad. Jessi Hilliard paced the team with six points. Gretchen Berns added a basket in the period. The PBHS squad led by four at the end of the first period, 8-4.

The offense ignited in the second period with good inside play. The PBHS squad found Berns underneath for 11 points in the period. Marie Unruh and Jana Windsor each put in two to give the Lady Warriors the edge at the half, 23-11.

The third period defense of the Lady Warriors was too much for the Cougars, holding them to five points. On the other side of the ball, the PBHS squad found the net with 18 points. Berns again led the quarter scoring with eight. Hilliard added four and Shannon Welsh and Traci Windsor put in a basket each. One free throw each was added by Unruh and Kali Alstrom. The Lady Warriors extended the lead, 41-26, at the end of the third.

The Cougar offense found the net in the fourth, shooting from the outside to add 14 to their total. The Lady Warrior offense kept rolling in the fourth, generating 19. Berns led the team with six. Alyssa Carter got on the board with four. Hilliard put in three, followed by Dalli Hammond, Unruh, and Windsor with two each. The Lady Warriors beat the Cougars, 60-30.

In the Ell-Saline game, both teams had trouble early on with their shooting percentage. The PBHS team took a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-8. Marie Unruh had four in the period. Dalli Hammond put up three with Tiana McGee, Shannon Welsh, and Jana Windsor adding two each.

The gap tightened in the second quarter with the Lady Warriors putting up seven. The Cardinals tacked on 10 in the period to narrow the difference to two at the half, 20-18, in favor of the PBHS squad. Unruh and Windsor had two each. Welsh, Berns, and Hilliard each added free throws.

After the half, both teams were shut down on offensive production. The Warriors kept the lead with one point separating the squads at the end of the third quarter, 26-25.

The Lady Warrior offense finally took control in the fourth quarter to put the game out of the Cardinals' reach. The defense did a good job holding the Ell-Saline team to four in the quarter. Hammond led the Lady Warriors with seven. Windsor put in five. Berns added four to finalize the Lady Warrior victory, 42-29.

Two more games are on tap for the Lady Warriors against Remington and Canton-Galva before starting sub-state play March 1 with a home game.
