Lady Warriors finish regular season with wins

The Peabody-Burns girls basketball team wrapped up their regular season this past week with two wins.

The Lady Warriors defeated the Remington Broncos Tuesday, 48-43. During their Friday match-up, the Lady Warriors overpowered the Canton-Galva Eagles, 74-31. The girls finished 15-5 for the season. They began sub-state play Monday at home.

Remington

In first quarter play against the Broncos, both teams were tough on offense. The Lady Warriors built a five-point lead, but the Broncos came back to within one at the end of the period, 15-14. Gretchen Berns led the team with six in the period. Dalli Hammond and Jana Windsor added four each and Marie Unruh put in a free throw.

The Lady Warrior defense held the Remington squad to seven points in the second period. The PBHS offense scored 13 to make the score 28-21 at the half. Unruh had five in the second with Windsor and Berns each contributing four.

Both teams scored well in the third period with the Lady Warriors holding the lead, 41-33, at the buzzer. Unruh paced the team with eight. Hammond had a trey and Windsor added a basket.

The Remington squad made a run at the Lady Warriors in the fourth period, coming to within two with 43 seconds remaining in the contest. The PBHS squad was steady at the line, earning three to put another win in the books, 48-43. Hammond scored three, all from the foul line. Berns added a basket and Tiana McGee and Unruh each put in a free throw to finalize the score.

Canton-Galva

In the final regular season game, the PBHS Lady Warriors were convincing on offense in the first quarter, scoring 20 points on the Canton-Galva Eagles. The PBHS defense was too much for the Eagles holding them to three. The Lady Warriors were up by 17 early, 20-3. Berns paced the team with seven. Hammond was close with six. Unruh added three, with Shannon Welsh and Windsor each putting in two.

The Lady Warrior offense continued to dominate the Eagles in the second period. Unruh put 10 on the board with Hammond adding six. Berns chipped in four and Hilliard rounded out the half-time lead with a basket. The PBHS squad was up 28 at the half, 42-14.

The offense slowed in the second half. Berns paced the PBHS team with 10. Welsh put in five with Hilliard and Kali Alstrom adding four each. Unruh had a trey. J. Windsor, Traci Windsor and Kelli Swenson all had one basket each. The Lady Warriors beat the Canton-Galva Eagles, 74-31.
