Lady Warriors fifth in tourney

The PBHS Lady Warriors traveled to Elbing for the 36th annual Eli J. Walter basketball tournament. The PBHS squad finished 2-1 in bracket play and brought home a fifth place trophy.

The Lady Warriors were defeated by Marion, but came back to take victories over Berean Academy and Douglass.

The PBHS squad now prepares for a trip to Little River Tuesday and a home game Friday against Moundridge.

In round one play, the Lady Warriors of Peabody-Burns met the Lady Warriors of Marion.

The game started slow for the Lady Warriors on offense. A tough press from the Marion squad made for few opportunities to put points on the board. A good fast break for the Marion team put the Lady Warriors of PBHS behind by 12 at the end of the first quarter, 22 to 10.

The Marion five poured on the defense in the second quarter holding the Peabody-Burns team to nine points. The Lady Warriors were down 23 at the half, 42-19.

The PBHS squad played a better second half, but came up short. They were defeated by the Marion Warriors, 70-51.

Gretchen Berns led the scoring for the PBHS team with 31 points and 10 rebounds.

Lady Warriors beat Berean Academy

In second round play, the Lady Warriors came out strong and ready to play against the Berean Warriors. The inside game for the PBHS squad was on fire with Gretchen Berns scoring 35 points in the contest. The Lady Warriors defeated the Berean Warriors, 67 to 49.

Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Warriors took on the Douglass Lady Bulldogs in round three of play in the tournament. The PBHS squad shot well, taking a six point lead, 15-9, at the end of the first quarter. They handled the defensive pressure of the Bulldogs, breaking the press to score points.

The second quarter was a little slower in offensive production, but the Warrior defense held the Bulldogs to six points. The Lady Warriors took a 27-15 lead to the locker room at the half.

Peabody widened the gap throughout the second half cruising to a victory, 54-35.

Dalli Hammond's 11 points against Douglass included three 3-pointers.

Gretchen Berns finished the tournament with 85 points in three games, setting a new tournament single scorer record.
