Lady Warriors are defeated in Berean tournament

The Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors lost all three rounds of the Eli J. Walter basketball tournament this past week at Berean Academy.
Goessel defeated PBHS, 47-21, in round one. Round two was a loss to Douglass, 54-42, and in round three, the Warriors were downed by Burrton, 39-28. The local team took eighth place in the tourney. Up next is a trip to Canton-Galva Tuesday night and Inman on Friday.
Goessel vs. PBHS
The Lady Warriors had a tough first quarter against the Bluebirds, scoring only two. The Bluebird edge at the end of the period was 11, with a score of 13-2.
PBHS offense scored six in the second. Goessel put in 16 and the led at the half, 29-10.
The home team managed to score only 11 points in the second half while Goessel added 18 which resulted in the Warriors being defeated, 47-21.
Warriors scoring was Elaina Newell, 13; Becky Morris, 4: Tabitha O'Neal, 2; and Danielle Savage, 2.
Douglass vs. PBHS
Round two against Douglass started with the Lady Warriors in control of the offense. PBHS built a six-point lead, 12-6, with less than three minutes to play in the first quarter. A Douglass trey at the buzzer closed the gap to one, 14-13. Newell had eight points, including two treys. Bayleigh Clark, Savage, and Jessica Gillet each had a basket.
Douglass offense made a move late in the second quarter and claimed the lead, 23-21. The quarter ended with a three-point advantage going to Douglass, 26-23. Newell made all nine points for the Lady Warriors in that period.
Douglass maintained the lead in the third and had a six-point edge at the buzzer, 39-33. PBHS offense added 10. Gillet paced the quarter with eight and Newell added a basket.
Traylee Woodruff and Newell added three each in the final period. Savage put in two free throws and Gillet added one. The Lady Warriors could not close the gap in the fourth and were defeated, 54-42.
Warrior scoring was Newell, 22; Gillet, 11; Savage, 4; Woodruff, 3; and Clark, 2.
Burrton vs. PBHS
PBHS took the early lead, 3-2, in the first quarter. The Chargers came back to take the advantage and held on to the edge at the end of the period, 9-5. Newell scored a trey and Morris had a basket.
With solid perimeter shooting, PBHS offense came back to take the lead with less than four minutes to play in the second. Newell scored four treys in the period. Gillet and O'Neal each had a basket. Burrton claimed the lead in the final seconds of the half, 23-21.
The Chargers built on their halftime edge to lead by eight at the end of the third, 31-23. PBHS offense slowed almost to a halt. Gillet had the only basket.
Lady Warrior offense added five in the fourth with Savage putting in three and Gillet adding a basket. Burrton added eight and they handed the PBHS squad their third loss in the tournament, 39-28.
