Lady Trojans turn back Sterling for fourth straight
Hillsboro gets big
second quarter to
down Bears, 39-29
Audrey Weinbrenner scored a season-high 13 points Friday to help lead the Lady Trojans (9-6) to their fourth straight win with a 39-29 victory over the hosting Sterling Lady Black Bears.
With the Black Bears still hanging around after the first quarter trailing 12-10, Hillsboro pulled away the second quarter with an 18-3 run.
Sterling outscored the Trojans 16-9 the second half as the first half proved to be the difference for Hillsboro.
Hannah Marsh scored 10 points.
In one of their better outings at the free-throw line this season, the Trojans sank eight-for-12.
The Trojans hosted the Smoky Valley Lady Vikings Tuesday.
Hillsboro then travels to Haven Friday for a 6 p.m. tip against the Lady Wildcats.
Halstead
It took an extra session Tuesday, but the Trojans were able to grind out a 41-36 win over the visiting Halstead Lady Dragons.
With the help of Hillsboro's frigid 27 percent shooting, Halstead stayed hot on the Trojans' tail all night.
The Trojans had a 9-8 lead after the first quarter and were up 19-17 at the break despite hitting 28 percent of their 29 shots.
Marsh had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds with a three-pointer proving to be pivotal in the first half.
JuliAnne Chisholm added 12 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high three rejections.
The Dragons held Marsh scoreless the third quarter, and Chisholm to two as they tied the game up at 28 to start the fourth quarter.
Even then, neither team could pull away with the score tied up 35-all to force overtime.
Free-throws haven't been the kindest to the Trojans this season, but 50 percent from six-for-12 the second half sounds good when the Dragons were only two-for-five.
Two baskets from Marsh and a free throw by both her and Amy Neufeld did the Dragons in as Hillsboro prevailed, outscoring Halstead 6-1 for the win.
