Labor Day committee tentatively finalizes plans

At the June 19 meeting of the Florence Labor Day committee members tentatively finalized plans for the three-day celebration.

In addition to the regular events, new events added this year include a saddle club trail ride which will start at Marion on Saturday and conclude with a parade though town that evening before the street dance.

Stagecoach rides will be available all day Sunday and Monday, a kite contest will be held Saturday morning, and a new event, a pinewood derby, will be Sunday afternoon.

A workshop and trial run will be held for the pinewood derby at 2 p.m. July 13 at Grandview Park. Entries still are welcome and kits are available for all ages at the cost of $3.50 plus a $1 entry fee. For more information, entrants may contact Duane McCarty or Del Leeds.

Sarah and Clint Cope will be in charge of the soapbox derby which will be down the 6th Street hill Saturday afternoon.

Youngsters will be able to compete in the pedal power contest again this year Sunday evening prior to the Gospel Sing. This will be followed by the ice cream social and fireworks at the lake.

New this year on Monday will be the Marion County Firemen's Olympics sponsored by the Florence Fire Department.

Watch for details of the three-day celebration as plans are completed.
