Labor Day celebration has something for everyone

Florence Labor Day events offer fun for the entire family.

Events for children Saturday include a soap box derby, ranch rodeo and mutton bustin', and amusements. On Sunday, a bicycle decorating workshop and sidewalk chalk art will be offered. Kid's games, turtle race, FFA Barnyard Olympics, carnival, and magician "Baron of Magic" will be on Monday.

For adults and families, a street dance Saturday night will feature country and western performer Matt Engels and his band. An ice cream social and gospel concert, showcasing Southern gospel singer Bill Burton and the Aulne Quartet, will be Sunday.

Local favorites The Prairie Goose Stompers will perform at the hog roast Sunday evening.

The traditional parade will be Monday morning with a chance to win prizes for decorated floats and best-decorated bicycles.

Teen fiddler Jake Tanner will perform Monday afternoon, followed by a karaoke contest.

On Sunday, there will be a poker run, KCBS Barbecue Cook-off, horseshoe pitching contest, car show, and cow chip bingo.

Brats will be sold before the street dance, and a community potluck luncheon will be served after the Sunday church service.

On Monday, barbecue, funnel cakes, stuffed peppers, chicken wings, Mexican food, brisket, and carnival food will be available.

Free trolley rides are available to and from parking areas and will tour the town.

Labor Day buttons are on sale for $4 at numerous locations. Advance carnival tickets are available for $1.50 each at Florence and Marion.
