Labor Day car show draws many entries
The Florence Labor Day car show had 23 entries in spite of inclement weather. Three classes of competition were held — original, '50 and older, and '51 and newer. Also, three overall winners were chosen by Florence's mayor, police chief, and fire chief.
Janette Parmley organized and ran the show for the second year. Around 40 door prizes, donated by businesses, were given, as well as trophies and cash prizes.
Winners in the original class were Myron Laflin, Newton, 1972 Mustang Mach 1, first; Howard Atwood, Emporia, 1955 Chevrolet, second; Ronald Herbel, Marion, 1958 Chevrolet, third.
In the 1950 and older class, Gary Cooper of McPherson was first with a 1931 Ford Coupe; Bob Lovelady of Marion was second with his 1931 Chevrolet, and Frank Werner, Marion, took third with his 1929 Ford Coupe.
Mark Tittel of Andale took first in the 1951 and newer class with his 1969 Ford Mustang Mach I; second went to Rick Williams of Wichita with a 1965 Ranchero; and third place went to Robert & Letha Zimmerman and their 1965 Mustang convertible.
Mayor's choice award went to Rodney Williams of Florence in a 1927 Buick. Fire chief's choice went to Danny Franz of Newton in a 1963 Ford, and the police chief's choice went to Wayne Ollenburger of Hillsboro in a 1980 Corvette L82.
