L.C. Walker
Leonard Jack Walker, 83, died May 12, 2004, at Peabody.
Born Aug. 8, 1920, in Merrimac, Okla., he was the son of John E. and Clara Bell (Pabitzky) Walker.
He completed school in Merrimac, then moved to Wichita to attend Wichita State University.
On May 24, 1941, he married his wife, Betty, at Wichita.
He served in the army during World War II and his family moved to Peabody. In 1947, he opened Walker's Corner Store.
He was active in Peabody community affairs for almost 40 years. He served as president of Kiwanis where his priority was to help build the municipal swimming pool. He was a member of the Peabody city council, a volunteer fireman, member of the chamber of commerce, and the American Legion.
He spent his final years at Legacy Park after Parkinson's disease made it difficult for him to continue his active lifestyle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Bernard Walker; and three sisters, Leola Walker, Greta Crisman, and Margaret Walker.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Peabody; two daughters, Carol Heiman of Tallahassee, Fla., and Sharon Schmill of Peabody six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Baker Funeral Home, Peabody.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Prairie Lawn Cemetery with Father Steve Gronert officiating.
A memorial fund has been established with Peabody Main Street Association.
