Klingenberg speaks to career class
Derek Klingenberg, Peabody-Burns graduate, returned to PBHS to share with students in the career and life planning class what it is like to work with three generations on the family farm.
Derek shared that college classes gave him new insight and new ideas to yield better crops and conserve the Earth.
He said the movement at this time is to save the environment. He is able to try new innovations while working with his grandfather and father.
Derek said he is given the freedom to try new things, but there is some reservation on the part of the other two generations. He feels very fortunate to be able to return to the family farm and become a part of that farm.
One of his new ventures is growing sunflowers. Derek shared with students that the "fat of choice" now for snack foods is sunflower oil, so he sees a market for that crop and will wait until harvest to determine the profitability of it.
