Kite flying club may form
Area kite fliers of all ages enjoyed the opportunity to fly kites and learn more about the hobby in May at Peabody's first potentially annual Kite Extravaganza.
Held at the east field of Peabody Eementary School an estimated 70 people attended the event to fly kites or watch family and friends fly theirs. The majority of those who attended were under the age of 15.
Jim and Carrie Truax, Peabody, spearheaded the event. They have spent several years working in Indonesia where the sport is a popular activity. They are recruiting people who enjoy this sport to get together for more kite flying activities and presentations by experts.
"We saw at the Kite Extravaganza that there are many in the area who enjoy flying kites," said Jim Truax. "We are hoping to get a group of people together for fun and to continue activities with kites; perhaps form a 'Kite Club' in the area. Kite flying is a great activity for parents and grandparents to do with their children and grandchildren."
Those interested in learning more about the art of kite flying or wanting to join others in future kite flying events, contact Truax at (620) 983-2616 or email jimtruax@southwind.net. If a group of people shows interest, a program will be scheduled with kite expert, Dave Ellis of Topeka, who attended the extravaganza.
