Keep those letters coming

The staff of the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, as well as readers of the Gazette, thank the people who took time to sit down and put their views into writing and share with us during the past year. We hope they will continue to do so, and that even more citizens will write in 2005.

Clearly, people like to read about others' views on the issues of the day, whether they are local, state, national, or international.

Rules for submitting letters to the editor are simple. Anyone from the local area can write about any subject they wish, while letter writers from outside the area will be published only if the letters pertain to a local issue.

We ask that writers try to limit their letters to 250-300 words. While we sometimes have the room to publish longer letters, shorter is better. Research shows that shorter letters are better read.

Writers may submit their letters either typed or clearly handwritten, and they can be mailed to us at PO Box 129, Peabody, faxed to us at 620-983-2700, dropped off at Jack Rabbit Hollow, or e-mailed to us at letters@peabodykansas.com.

Anonymous letters to the editor will NOT be printed. We require the writer's name, address, and phone number be included on submitted letters.

While the Gazette is not obliged to publish every letter to the editor, few are not published. Those not published usually contain potential libelous comments or attack a private individual or business.

The free flow of information and lively discussions of elected officials' decisions or actions is at the very foundation of our democracy, and the Gazette (as do all newspapers) allows writers more latitude in writing about public officials. That doesn't mean the Gazette agrees with any letters that comment negatively about the decisions or actions of a public official. It only means we support their decision to have their voices heard and added to the public discussion through the use of our newspaper.

We encourage all of our readers to sit down during the year and share your views about issues. You can be assured your letter WILL be read.
