July 4th planning begins
Even though most people are just now thinking of planting gardens, doing spring cleaning, and tackling lawn mowing obligations, the Peabody Fourth Celebration Society has its sights set several months ahead to the 86th annual fireworks celebration.
Everything from ordering buttons, port-a-potties, and fuses to finding volunteers to man the gates and build the set pieces is done early in the year.
"As always, donations are needed to help fund the celebration," said Alisa Holm-McDowell, who with husband Brian McDowell oversees much of the planning and work that goes into the celebration. "Last year it cost just a little over $13,200. That includes the fireworks, advertising, band, buttons, everything we spend.
"Donations play a big part in funding the celebration," she said.
Holm-McDowell said the carnival has been booked and the committee is in the process of hiring a band called "Second Nature" which performs '70s, '80s, and '90s rock and roll.
"Other events in the planning are the horseshoe tournament, flea market, car show, kid's games, and the parade," she added. "And we had someone suggest a barbecue contest and a 'Peabody Idol' contest. We would certainly like for some enthusiastic individuals to step up and make some new traditions!"
