Jim Baldwin

Florence businessman Jim Baldwin, 58, died March 19, 2003, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

A roofing contractor, he was a community volunteer and well known over a wide area.

He was a volunteer fire fighter for 25 years, rescue truck and ambulance driver, and Little League baseball coach.

He was a member of the American Legion post at Florence, the VFW post at Peabody, and Florence United Methodist Church.

Born Oct. 10, 1944, at Hugoton. Jimmie Dean Baldwin was the son of Harrison and Dorothy (Hartsell) Baldwin. The family moved to Newton in 1953. He attended Newton High School where he played football and basketball. He volunteered for Navy service after his junior year. He served in the engine room on a mine sweeper.

He was discharged in 1964 and served in the reserve for two years.

After Navy service he moved to Florence where he lived his remaining years.

In 1969 he was married to Beverly Robinson of Florence. Survivors include his wife, Beverly of the home in Florence; son Dean Baldwin of Marion; daughter, Michelle Parks of Newton; brothers, Ben Baldwin of Albuquerque, N.M., Bob Baldwin of Moundridge, and Phil Baldwin of Newton; sisters, Goldie LaGree and Diane Miller, both of Newton; his mother, Dorothy, of Newton; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers.

Memorial services were held Monday afternoon at Florence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Dyar and the Rev. Larry Timm officiating.

John McKay American Legion Post 308 presented military honors.

A memorial fund has been created in his name with Florence Ambulance Service.
