J.J. Chappelle
J.J. Chappelle, 79, of Florence, died Nov. 9, 2005, at Newton Medical Center, Newton.
Born Nov. 15, 1925, at Flippin, Ark., he was the son of George E. and Ruby (McCracken) Chappelle.
He grew up and attended school in Flippin. In March 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II.
After the war, he worked in the naval shipyard at Mobile, Ala., for several years before moving to Wichita in 1956, to begin his career as a postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service.
On Jan. 15, 1979, he married Peggy Harris at Wichita.
He retired from the postal service in 1985, and the couple moved to Florence.
He was past president of the Postal Workers Union in Wichita and an active member of Florence Chamber of Commerce.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy; two sons, Mark of Wichita and Paul of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Linda Guerra of Wichita and Veronica Crabtree of Peabody; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at Zeiner Funeral Home Chapel, Florence, with Father Hien Nguyen officiating.
Honorary casket bearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Inurnment was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Florence, with military rites by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
A memorial fund has been established with Central Care Cancer Center.
