Items available through peaBay

A long-standing successful fund-raiser for the Main Street program in Peabody is the "Not Necessarily Annual Benefit Auction."

The main focus of the benefit auction is generally Peabody memorabilia, but Main Street also has included an "originals" category that has been equally successful. The originals are one-of-a-kind items made by local and alumni artists and craftsmen.

The memorabilia category encompasses anything from Peabody's past that might generate enough interest to make bidders turn loose of as many dollars as auctioneers Bob Marshall and Shane Marler can push them into spending. In the past the auctions have included old advertising items, post cards, yearbooks, photographs, signs, and yes, one time even the urinal from the back room of Glenn and Chet McMillan's bar!

Gosh, don't you wish you'd been there to bid on that?

From time to time alumni and former residents have expressed disappointment that they didn't know about certain items being offered on the auction. This has come up often enough that the Main Street board has decided to offer select Peabody items to all of you who are receiving this newsletter.

Here are the rules: 1) Find the coupon ad, clip, fill it out, and mail it in. 2) Bids on each item start at $20. 3) Bid high — this is a benefit auction, after all. 4) Be prepared to pay actual shipping and insurance charges in addition to your bid price. 5) Peabody Main Street is a 501(c)3 organization so your purchase is tax deductible. 6) Bidding on this group will end Nov. 1, 2003.

In the case of identical high bids, the winner will be determined in a drawing by Peabody's mayor, Hizzoner Randy Dallke.

Remember, the more you bid, the better your chances of owning one of these "to die for" pieces of your past. Help your hometown and help yourself!

Here are the descriptions of each item available in this newsletter:

1) 1966-67 laminated PHS basketball schedule poster with team and coach photos, schedule of games. Coaches are Gene Ferguson, Leo Heidebrecht, Lewis Mann, Ray Slyter. Team members are Steve Berry, Tom Burkholder, Charles Clark, Herb Gaines, Rod Myers, Layne Pierce, Mike Reynolds, Paul Richmond, and Don Stucky.

If you recognize yourself, a sibling, child, parent, in-law, or friend in any of the above, jump right in with a bid. We are sure you will be a hit at the next family gathering. And we will never tell that your purchase was tax deductible to boot!

So there you have it . . . our first peaBay offering. Let us know if there is something you would like to own from your hometown. We will do our best to deliver. Happy bidding to one and all!
