Indian harvest gospel gathering is Sept. 30 years ago

Fall visitors to Peabody have a treat in store as they have an opportunity Sept. 30 to eat great food, explore the museum complex, see demonstrations at the Print Museum, and listen to bluegrass gospel music at the Christian church during the annual fall event sponsored by Peabody Historical Society.
This year's event is a non-walking — at least very little walking — event.
Food service will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the basement of Carnegie Library. Those entering by the north door will have the opportunity to admire the new/old lights near the north entry. Lights from the former high school were donated by Bob and Susan Marshall and installed as a joint project of Peabody Library Board and the historical society.
Downstairs, soups and pies which are trademarks of the historical society's food offerings will be available. Remember Gwen's cheeseburger soup or Mary's lentils or that sour cream apple pie?
Joshua and Jacob Marshall, in-house printers at the Printing Museum have a tour and demonstration lined up to acquaint visitors with how much effort went into producing printed materials, especially the weekly newspaper, in a pre-computer era.
Wander through the Morgan House, the restored 1881 home of editor W.H. Morgan or marvel at how the little building that was the first free library in Kansas has survived with style. Gospel music will waft throughout the buildings to set the tone for the evening performances.
The historic Christian church across the street from the museum complex on the north side of Division Street offers easy entrances and ample seating to listen to the bluegrass gospel offerings of the Brothers and the Sisters from Goessel and the Emmanuelaires from Abilene. Both groups are well-known in the area for their great harmony. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
The entire event is available for $10 in advance or $12.50 at the door. Tickets are available from board members or at Mayesville Mercantile. Checks for advance tickets may be mailed to Pauline McPheeters, 406 Maple, Peabody, or Marilyn Jones, 1556 E. 59, Peabody.
Board members are Ed Slocombe, Ross Baker, Ron Hedrick, Ellen Teaford, Pat Jury, Pat Henderson, Pat Ketchum, Carmen South, or Tom Schmidt.
