Illegal items dumped in city burn pit
Peabody city administrator Jeff Benbrook announced there has been an increase in illegal items being dumped at the burn pit.
On several occasions city workers have found a large quantity of construction/demolition material. "Someone even tore off their porch and took the whole thing down there," said Benbrook.
Furniture and other illegal items also have been dumped.
Benbrook said the city has been warned once by Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) about illegal material being found in the burn pit.
"All it will take (to shut the burn pit permanently) will be a surprise visit from KDHE officials when there are illegal materials there," Benbrook said.
Residents can order large dumpsters from Stutzman Refuse or make private arrangements to haul away construction/demolition materials, but they cannot be taken to the burn pit.
Grass, leaves, lawn trimmings, and tree limbs are the only items allowed in the burn pit. Grass and leaves may not be left at the burn pit in plastic bags.
"Disposing of yard waste will be a lot tougher for property owners if the burn pit is closed," warned Benbrook. "Everyone needs to abide by city and KDHE regulations on this one, or KDHE will just shut us down."
